(b) Flood

A flood is a natural calamity like and earthquake. It is an annual event in our country. A flood is nothing but a mass of water which overflows the river banks and spreads over the land on both sides. When there are heavy rain in the hills uge currents of water come down from there into the rivers. The rivers cannot contain this water. the result is a flood.

The main cause of flood is, no doubt excessive rainfall. But there are other causes also. Some people say that the rainfall of the present day has not increased in comparison with the past, experts are of opinion that river banks have been elevated by soil washed away from the hills. Rivers have become shallow and as such they cannot contain as much water as before. Formerly a good percentage of water was retained in hills by jungles. But now those jungles in the hills have been cleared and those fail to retain or prevent water from coming down ail at once. This is why floods are frequent now a days.

When there is a flood at a place, everything is under water houses. fields, roads etc. are all submerged, People have to leave their poultry and cattle. Crops in fields are destroyed. Some cattle, houses and even human being are carried away by strong currents. This continues for day or even weeks.

When at last the flood subsides, it leaves rotten things here and there. Everything then is covered with silt. Drinking water is polluted. Then comes the time for famine on one side an d epidemics on the other. Helpless people and domestic animals die for want of food. A bad smell of rotten things fills the air making the healthly people sick.

(c) My aim in Life

“Life is real, life is earnest And the grave is not its goal.”

This stanza has been taken from the poem “he Pslam of Life”. Life is to be spent at deeper meaning. We fulful God’s purpose, we should spend our life seriously in the service of humanity.

When I grow up, I hope to devote myslef in doing good to my fellow men in a spirit of service. The saint and patriot Swami Vivakananda has taught us that the workship of God consists into service of the created beings. There are various ways of service. The best of them is the spread of knowledge among men.

After completing my education. I shall retire any one of the many villages of my own district. These villages are stepped in darkness of ignorance and superstition. The people of the villages do not know in which way their good lies. They are easy and helpless victims of illness, proverty and exploitation. I shall devote myself to their education, so that they may know temselves, realise the value of life like real human beings.

In the very beginning, I shall start school and proced to teach them reading and writing. First of all, I shall try to make the village healthy, by cleaning jungles, construction drains, making roads and closing up unnecessary holes and ponds. I shall teach the people the elementary rules of health and show them how to keep drinking water pure.

I shall try to find out supplementary means of income for the villagers because the only profession in our village is agriculture and it cariot keep one busy for the whole year,. The peasants have to remain idle for about six months, I shall have try to find out occupation for then in cottage industries so that they may be economically sound.

(d) Election

India is a democratic country. The democratic country is ruled through public representatives. The Public representatives are elected by election. In India general elections take place after every five years Citizens above 18 years of age have right to vote.

First of all electoral rolls are prepared to elect the representatives. Such electoral rolls consists of those men who are entitled to vote. According to the rules of election ction only adults are given chance to cast vote. When such eligible men are rolled, they are published. Then the date of election is fixed. Some places are elected for election. Those places are called ‘polling booth’. Local officers conduct elections. Voters go there and cast their votes according to their choices.

There are two methods of election. Sometimes it is held by show of hand and sometimes by ballot papers. The miner election is held by show of hand and major is held by ballot-papers, any eligible man can fight election. The election fighters have to file the nomination papers before scrutiny officer. After scrutiny they are permitted to fight election. They begin propaganda and canvasing to win the faith of voters, the candidates spend huge money in election. They often indulge in mud-slinging and is slandering one another.

The election scene looks very attractive. All are busy. Voters rush in and out the polling booth. Some partymen are seen active and press voters to vote their candidates. In clection there are certain irregularities which are seen. Bogus votes are polled. The presiding officers are seen influenced by the party in power. According to the rules of election the presiding and scrutiny officers should be neutral.

Thus, election is an essential element of democracy. The weapon of election has been given people to choose their ruler. Poeple must exercise their vote in favour of the most suitable person. In democracy every citizen must be represented in the administration. So, we must take part in the election.

The computer is very useful and popular for us. In the offices we can do our work faster through the computer. There in no need to maintain records on register, but we fill up everything in the mind of computer. Its work is very miraculous. We cannot imagine the approach of the computer. In 1988 the super computer was manufactured by a U.S. firm, which produced twenty seven billian operation per second.

Though the computer is the result of human mind exercise, but it does the work faster than the human mind. It does the works of many people in one day. So many people remain unempoyed. This is the demerit of the computer.

(a) An Epitaph

‘An Epitaph’ is a short poem composed by Walter de la Mare. In this poem the poet deals with the transitoriness of human life and human relationship.

Here, the poet expresses his bad feelings for a very beautiful lady who has died. She was the most beautiful lady in the west country. She was light of step and heart. Her beauty was very attractive, but it is short lived. There is no way to save beauty from destruction. After her death, her beauty vanishes and passes. The poet loved her so much that when she was dead, he was weeping bitterly. He used to sit on her epitaph, where she was laid down. The poet feels that nobody will remember her after his death.

Thus, the poet means to say that beauty is not eternal it vanishes with the passage of time.

It is the constitution of a comparatively new state which is free citizens have, for the fist time in history, given to themselves. It is the young state of an ancient people who through the long milliannia and through cooperation of divorse ethnic elements, have striven to realise timeless, absoulte values in their own particular way. I pledge myself to the service of those values. For, though some concrete realisation of a value may become inadequate with the change of circumstance, the value remains eternally valid and pressed for newer and fresher realisation. The past is not dead and static, it is alove and dynamic and is involved in determining the quality of our persent and the prospects of our fututer.
